Design Hotel
Amongst a gilded landscape of uber-5 star hotels, Straf Hotel is a refreshing dose of design cool in central Milan. A former-19th Century palazzo gets the onceover by architect designer Vincenzo de Cotiis who leaves the façade of the masonry structure intact aside from its lighted marquee and steel glass doors. Inside, clean and angular lines retreat at polished concrete floors and cubist pillars that rise the height of the space. Cubist lounge arrangements lend a futuristic feel with glass partitions that lead to an in-house eatery and livelier bar scene. Bar Straf is a popular fashionista haunt with nightly influx of fashion workers and catwalkers that keep the lounge perking till 2am.
The Room
A total of 64 rooms and suites feature raw concrete floors and walls with glass-enclosed bathrooms that echo an austere, modern design. Beds float in the middle of entry-level rooms with modern artwork strewn from walls and TVs suspended from the ceiling on industrial steel rods. Larger suites feature separate living area with counter-style dining room an walls of glass that reveal an outdoor terrace. Bathrooms mix a menagerie of natural materials from tarnished brass, antique mirrors, honed iron and black stone and cement.
